Owning a premium European motorhome is even more achievable with the range of used vehicles available from SmartRV. These ex-rental motorhomes are top quality German brands that have proved their safety and reliability on New Zealand roads. They come extensively refurbished with full mechanical checks, warranty and the ongoing support of SmartRV’s expert mechanical and After Sales teams.
At SmartRV, our range of used vehicles are top quality Bürstner and Carado motorhomes from renowned German manufacturer Erwin Hymer Group. The motorhomes spend a maximum of three years as part of the rental fleet at our sister company Wilderness Motorhomes. During this time they undergo regular comprehensive maintenance and servicing that is well above industry standards. Once they’re taken off the rental fleet they’re extensively refurbished and prepared for sale.
Smart RV Sales manager, Samantha Kidson, says Wilderness’ position at the premium end of the rental market means the used motorhomes reflect that. “We have to maintain the vehicles to a particularly high standard for our discerning local and international clientele, so when we do take them off the rental fleet they are already in great condition.”
Maintenance is carried out every time a motorhome returns to the Wilderness bases in Auckland or Christchurch, not just on a rolling calendar schedule. Wilderness Rental Team Leader, James Steyl, says the service teams follow strict guidelines and carry out a servicing procedure that far exceeds industry norms. “We have what’s called a ‘turnaround sheet’ from the vehicle’s manufacturer, so we check every single thing, from the front to the back to make sure everything is working,” he explains. “We also do mechanical checks on the tyres, suspension and brakes.” Components are also topped up or replaced well before their due dates to avoid the potential for problems to crop up. This exceptional maintenance regime is carried out by our European-trained technical team who are experienced in working with these sophisticated machines.
Once a motorhome has completed three seasons in the Wilderness rental fleet, it is readied for sale. This includes fixing any little dents or scrapes on the panel work that may not have been possible to rectify during the busy rental peak season, and putting new decals on the sides if needed. Inside, any scratches are repaired, the condition of the mattresses is assessed and other areas may be reupholstered. Blinds and fly screens are installed and the motorhomes then undergo a full mechanical check with our expert in-house service team, who also ensure there is minimum 50% tread on the tyres.
Mileage on the used motorhomes can range from 120,000km to 150,000km and Samantha recommends buying sooner to get the vehicles at the lower end of the scale. “Those coming off the fleet later in the refurbishment programme will have been working in the interim and will have the higher mileage.”
She says buying a used motorhome from SmartRV can be a more affordable way of getting a top quality German motorhome, and notes that Bürstner brand vehicles are known for maintaining great resale value. 2018 will also be the first year that we will offer value brand Carado in our used motorhome range, with the first vehicles due to come off the Wilderness fleet in May.
If you’re looking to buy a particular Bürstner or Carado model, it could well be on the Wilderness rental fleet, meaning you could book it for a few days to get a really good idea of whether it’s the right motorhome for you. Wilderness Motorhomes offers Try Before You Buy -- a special deal when you rent a motorhome and then buy from SmartRV, with the cost of your first three days' rental taken off the price of the motorhome*. “This is a great option for people who are looking to buy a motorhome,” says Samantha, “especially if they are new to motorhoming and want to get a feel for what it’s like.”
